Voyage Optimisation Plan (VOP): Reading Weather Graphs, Dangerous Segments, and Route Detail

What the VOP's weather graphs, dangerous segments, and route table (RPM, power, via-points, vessel zones) show, and how to read them.

Written by Tamseel Haider

Question: What do the weather graphs, dangerous segments, and route table on a VOP show, and how detailed do they get?

Every new or re-generated VOP includes the following, available directly in the platform's standard optimisation view:

  • Optimisation-specific instructions: instructions are worded for the actual optimisation type in use (e.g. Constant Consumption, Charter Party), so the vessel receives the exact directive rather than a generic one.

  • Weather graphs: show real conditions rather than averages, covering up to 10 days ahead, including the true direction of wind and current — not just averaged data.

  • Dangerous segments: marked and explained directly in the routing table, with strict and flexible weather safety parameters shown on the graphs themselves.

  • Route table detail: includes more via-points, RPM, and power figures, alongside visible vessel zones (HRA, ECA, etc.).

Use this level of detail to reduce back-and-forth between shore and the Master — the plan itself explains its own reasoning rather than requiring a separate conversation.
