Voyage Optimisation: Buffer Time to Reduce Risk of Late Arrival

What Buffer Time does when enabled on a voyage plan (3-6 hour ETA margin, higher initial speed on long voyages) and the cost trade-off involved.

Question: What does enabling Buffer Time do to a voyage plan?

Buffer Time is a planning option that adds a time margin to voyage plans to reduce the risk of late arrival.

  • When enabled, the system adjusts the ETA to arrive 3–6 hours earlier than the latest allowable time, depending on voyage duration.

  • For voyages longer than 7 days, the plan may start at a slightly higher speed to account for uncertainty, unless enough margin already exists without it.

  • This is designed to avoid last-minute speed-ups near arrival and reduce delay risk overall.

Trade-off to know: enabling Buffer Time can lead to slightly higher predicted voyage costs, since the plan is more conservative by design.
