Voyage Optimisation: Strict and Flexible Weather Safety Parameters

The difference between Strict weather limits (never violated) and Flexible weather limits (preferred, may be breached with a warning based on necessity, cost, degree, and duration).

Question: What's the difference between Strict and Flexible weather safety parameters?

Strict Weather Safety Parameters — non-negotiable thresholds the routing algorithm will never violate when generating a route.

  • If any part of a potential route breaches a strict limit, that route is rejected.

  • For optimised routes, if no viable plan exists without violating a strict limit, the optimisation fails outright, giving you immediate feedback on unnavigable conditions.

  • For shortest and custom routes, a route is still generated even if it involves unsafe weather, accompanied by clear warnings.

Flexible Weather Safety Parameters — preferred thresholds the algorithm aims to avoid, but can breach under specific circumstances. When deciding whether to breach a flexible limit, the algorithm weighs:

  • Necessity: is violating the limit essential to reach the destination?

  • Cost of alternatives: how much extra distance, time, and fuel would avoiding it cost?

  • Degree of violation: how significantly would the limit be breached?

  • Duration of violation: for how long would it be breached?

If a route breaches a flexible limit, a warning is triggered and shown on the results cards.
